The new season approaches .......
With the new season just weeks away, we would like to introduce our Captains and Vice Captains for the new season.
Starting firstly with Club Captain, David Fletcher. A native of Berkshire, David moved to Yorkshire in 1993 and has worked in the electronics industry for the last 20 years. Sporting activities in his early years were mainly focussed on cricket, playing at first and second team level in west London leagues and then after settling in the Harrogate area, playing for Pannal and then Knaresborough.
Married with one daughter who is currently studying for a Business degree at Leeds Met University, David took up the game of golf at the age of 40 when invited to take part in a Corporate Golf day. The game immediately became an obsession and the focus of his sporting life. Currently playing off a handicap of 11, David is looking forward to the season ahead and representing Rudding Park in the competitive fixtures as well as renewing acquaintances at the other member clubs in the Harrogate Union and supporting a full calendar of events at Rudding Park.
After 15 years working for a bank Lady Captain, Hazel Spinlove, moved to Yorkshire from Lincoln in 1997 to try life as a student at Leeds Met before joining the family business of managing serviced apartments in Harrogate. Having taken up golf in 2006 in a bid to find something respectable to do with her spare time on reaching the age of 40, Hazel joined Rudding Park Golf Club a year later in 2007 and obtained her first official handicap of 28. Now playing off 18 she has been a regular representative of Rudding Park in both the Yorkshire Ladies A team matches and the HDU winter league.
Having “hung up his boots” after a successful sports career that included International honors in Swimming and National League Div 3 rugby, Vice Captain Dominic O’Sullivan found golf took over as the competitive drug. Still classed as a rookie Dominic has reduced his handicap to its current 8 since taking up the game in 2005. Life in Harrogate started after a 14 year career in the RAF as a PTI, with a Management role at the Academy Health Club in 1999 and winning Industry Awards as a Fitness Manager. Since 2001 Dominic has run his own Consultancy specializing in Membership Retention within Leisure and Health Clubs which was a past winner of Ackrill Media Small Business of the Year. He is married with 4 children and represented RPGC as part of last year’s Inter Club winning 1st Team.
Ladies Vice Captain, Pam Dodds, was brought up in Harrogate, and first took an interest in golf in her late teens when her parents, who were both keen golfers, took her to play golf in Scotland. She then moved to London for work, and met future husband Steve. They moved back to Harrogate several years later, where they had three children at which time golf took a backseat as they spent most of their time and money looking after them. With the children all now in their early twenties, Pam has more time to play golf, joining Rudding Park where she has made terrific friends over the years. She currently plays off a handicap of 22, and this year was honored to be asked to be Vice Captain.
Dave Brecken, Seniors Captain, retired back to his Harrogate roots with his wife Jean in 1998, after a 34 year career in the Royal Navy, during which he progressed from Artificer Apprentice to Lieutenant Commander in the Weapon Engineering specialisation. He then worked for 11 years at Rudding Park Golf, primarily as Course Ranger, until late 2009. Dave played representative golf at Inter-Service and County level for the Royal Navy on many occasions, and whilst serving in Gibraltar was a member of their Golf Team at the 1997 Small Island Games in Jersey. An administrative highlight in golf was the management of the scoreboard and course communication volunteers at the Valderrama Ryder Cup.
Bryan Holmes, Seniors Vice Captain, was introduced to golf as long ago as the 60’s on the lush green of Filey’s pitch and putt course. However, football became his sporting passion until injuries took their toll. Taking up golf again, Bryan joined Castle Eden and Peterlee Golf Club in 1982. Shortly after his arrival in Harrogate as Branch Manager of Britannic Assurance in August 1989, he joined Skipton Golf Club followed by a two year stint at Oakdale until work commitments and illness intervened. Finally Bryan retired in 2000 and from 2004 recaptured the golfing bug at Rudding Park.
With the weather becoming progressively better, the March Stableford was once again well represented and competitors eager to get back in the golfing groove.
In division two, Chris Williamson recorded his first top place finish, with 44 points. Second place in the division went to the ever improving Keith Richardson, carding 44 points claming the spot on count-back. Heading the division was Steve Edwards with a fantastic 46 points. In division one, Daniel Wilcox finished in third place with 38 points. Mathew Jackson claimed another top placed finish, with 39 points enough for second place. Winning division one on count-back was Shane Mcleer, also with 39 points. Two’s recorded in the event were carded by the following; Ian Rankine, Dave Bond, James Crowther, Brian McLelland, Daniel Wilcox, Stephen Raine, David Fletcher, Steve Corrie, Steve Edwards, David Smith and Pam Dodds.
With the new season approaching fast, the highly anticipated season’s opener has been organised and the sign up sheet has now been published. The event which will take place on Saturday 3 April will be a shot gun start, commencing at 08:30. The event will include a Texas Scramble and both pre and post golf refreshments. The event will also include the traditional Captains Drive In. Spaces for this event are limited and going fast, so sign up in the member’s room today.
March 1 saw the start of the new membership year at Rudding Park. On behalf of all the staff at the club, we would like to welcome members new and existing to the new membership year and wish all of those who have renewed another exciting season.
