historic building

the history of rudding park

In 1788 Lord Loughborough purchased the original house and later commissioned the renowned landscape designer, Humphry Repton, to improve the surrounding landscape.

In 1805 the estate was purchased by the Hon. William Gordon. He began construction of the present House but nineteen years later, when Rudding Park passed into the hands of Sir Joseph Radcliffe, the building was still unfinished. The Yorkshire architect RD Chantrell was brought in to complete the work.

In 1972 the House and 2000 acre estate was acquired by the Mackaness family. The entire estate has been significantly improved with a major programme of investment to upgrade the agricultural land and traditional estate properties. The blueprint for the leisure developments was prepared in 1973 and the first stage was implemented with the opening of Rudding Holiday Park which quickly established itself as one of the finest in the North of England.

In 1987 Rudding Park House was opened as a conference and banqueting centre. The 18 hole golf course was opened in 1995, a development which was followed two years later by a 50 bedroom Hotel adjoining the House, making Rudding Park Yorkshire’s premier hotel and golf resort.
